THE HEART BEHIND UAC

From Pain to Purpose

“I created Using Athletics to Cope in honor of my brother—a gifted athlete who never had the positive role model he needed. Despite his potential, he struggled in school, fell in with the wrong crowd, and was charged as an adult at just 17. In 2018, he passed away in a house fire before ever reaching his full potential.

As I processed his life, one truth became painfully clear: he didn’t need punishment—he needed guidance. Someone he could trust. Someone who believed in him.

That’s what I want every young person to have—especially youth in low-income communities who are too often overlooked or written off. Through mentorship and movement, UAC helps young people build confidence, regulate emotions, and find purpose.

This isn’t just a program. It’s a promise that no child should face life’s challenges alone.”

Every Child Deserves a Chance at Greatness

Our Mission

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we support youth mental health and overall well-being by combining mentorship with movement. Through athletics-based programs, young people learn to manage stress, build resilience, and develop healthy coping skills that help them thrive, on and off the field.

Our Vision

We envision a community where every young person has access to mentorship, movement, and mental health support. By 2030, our goal is to serve 200+ youth each year, breaking cycles of poverty and developing resilient, disciplined leaders who create change in their lives and communities.

We believe access to support should never depend on income.

Why Using Athletics to Cope

  • We combine movement, mentorship, and mental health, not one without the other

  • We remove cost barriers so access is equitable, not conditional

  • We focus on depth of impact, not just attendance numbers

  • We meet youth where they are — on the court, in the community, and in real life
